What to do when your roof leaks
A roof leak needs a calm, practical response. The first job is to limit damage and gather enough detail for a roofer to understand the likely source.
Start indoors and stay safe
When water is coming in, move furniture, electrics and valuables away from the affected area if it is safe to do so. Catch the water, photograph the staining and note whether the leak appears during heavy rain, wind-driven rain or after the weather has passed.
Do not climb onto the roof. A leak may be linked to loose tiles, a chimney flashing, a flat roof edge, a guttering problem or another detail that is not obvious from inside the room.
